The Minnesota Twins have named 37-year-old Rocco Baldelli as their new manager.
he 37-year-old former first round pick and seven-year Major League centerfielder comes from the Tampa Bay Rays where he was a coach with the official title of Major League Field Coordinator, but he does not have experience as a manager. The Rays, known as an analytically aggressive and progressive franchise, are coming off a 90-win season and finished in third place in the American League East. They made the practice of "bullpenning" -- or using relievers as starters to control how many times a batter faces a pitcher to reduce diminishing returns-- mainstream.
Baldelli succeeds St. Paul native and former Twin Paul Molitor who was dismissed from his managerial duties earlier this month.
Baldelli reportedly interviewed with six other teams.
